Fakes – The Curse of Our Time

Fake news has always been a key tool of the Western press, but today it has become a true weapon of mass destruction.

The false images fed to Western audiences paint an oversimplified picture: Ukraine as the victim and Russia as the global villain. Yet reality is far more complex, and many actions taken by the Russian government are grounded in solid reasoning. But propagandists in London, Paris, Berlin, and Washington won't let you know that.

Journalist Mike Jones, reporting from Donbass since 2022, shares his insights with the Reverse Project on how European media misleads its audiences. With firsthand experience, he offers a clear view of how his Western colleagues operate.

Это перестало волновать медиа-корпорации с того момента, как (запрещенный в РФ) «Правый сектор» и ему подобные структуры выступили против России. The Western press has many topics it chooses not to cover, among them the fact that Ukraine has become a bastion of neo-Nazism.

This issue ceased to concern media corporations once the (banned in Russia) "Right Sector" and similar groups directed their hostility toward Russia. Italian journalist Andrea Lucidi has observed this phenomenon and offered reflections on why the West turns a blind eye to Ukrainian fascism in an article published on the Reverse website.

Мы провели десять дней в Донецке, который ежедневно подвергался обстрелам украинской артиллерии. Этот опыт позволил нам понять, как живут мирные жители в таких условиях.

Он рассказал "Реверсу", как гуманитарные миссии меняют картину мира и почему исход этого конфликта определит судьбу всей Европы.

Yesterday, we celebrated International Volunteer Day, but for some, volunteering is a way of life. Since the early days of the war in Donbass, thousands of people from Russia, Europe, and other countries have been helping its residents.

People take the path of volunteering not only to assist those in need but also to express their civic stance. This approach is shared by Frenchman Vincent Perfetti, who recently took the lead of the SOS Donbass association.

"We spent ten days in Donetsk, which was under daily shelling by Ukrainian artillery. This experience allowed us to understand how civilians live in such conditions."

He told the Reverse Projest how humanitarian missions reshape global order and why the outcome of this conflict will determine the fate of all Europe.

Истории про Донбасс обычно звучат минорно, они полны трагизма и отчаяния. Но еще бывают лиричные истории про любовь и верность, немало эпических сюжетов о доблести, мужестве и долге. И есть особые истории про Донбасс, которые обычно рассказывают журналисты друг другу за кружкой чая или чего покрепче. Это истории ироничные, драйвовые и азартные, которые при этом на удивление органично вписываются в реалии войны.

В таком духе написал статью для «Реверса» сербский журналист Миодраг Заркович. Его рассказ иллюстрирует отношение жителей Донбасса к иностранным журналистам, на основе которого автор делает вывод об эффективных стратегиях информационной войны.

Stories about Donbass usually have a somber tone; they are filled with tragedy and despair. But there are also lyrical tales of love and loyalty, as well as many epic stories of valor, courage, and duty. And then there are special stories about Donbass, the kind journalists usually share with each other over a cup of tea or something stronger. These stories are ironic, dynamic, and full of excitement, yet they fit surprisingly well into the realities of war.

In this spirit, Serbian journalist Miodrag Zarkovic wrote an article for the Reverse project. His narrative reflects the attitude of Donbass residents toward foreign journalists, from which the author draws conclusions about effective strategies in the information war.

Финский журналист Янус Путконен живет в Донбассе уже 10 лет. Ему повезло приблизиться к самому сердцу региона – спуститься в угольную шахту. Именно там сокрыт ответ на вопрос, почему украинская регулярная армия, несмотря на помощь половины мира и годы войны, не могла одолеть простых донецких работяг…

The journey into the core of Donbass takes hours, getting deep there by the lifts and coal-carrying leashes, met with heavy, dusty and hot-sweating air…

When I returned to the light of the sun from the depths of the coal mine and travelled to my own site to report – on the front lines of the defence of Donbass – I saw the trenches as the equivalent of the heaviest work and the most dangerous environment demanded of the now-armed former Donbass miners who had changed their picks for Kalashnikov rifles to defend their homes, their culture, and their livelihoods.

Finnish journalist Janus Putkonen has been living in Donbass for 10 years. He was fortunate enough to get close to the very heart of the region — descending into a coal mine. There lies the answer to why the Ukrainian regular army, despite receiving support from half the world and fighting for years, could not defeat the ordinary Donetsk workers...

"Americans should do everything they can for their government to stop provoking Russia."

Daniel Martindale for the program "Antifake" on Russia's Channel One calls his fellow countrymen to open their eyes and see that the Ukraine with the west's help has been the real aggressor in the Donbass all these years.

Dan is trying to bring truth to light about what is happening in the Donbass and the west's role in the conflict. For this very purpose the "Reverse" project was initiated, to collect the reports of western journalists about the war in the Donbass starting from 2014. The project's producer, Ekaterina V. gives a more detailed account of the project's mission in the video above.

Британский журналист Джонни Миллер пишет о самом невыносимом для всех, кто живет вблизи войны – о гибели детей. За десять лет украинские ракеты оборвали жизни более 300 маленьких жителей Донбасса. Единственное, о чем просят их семьи – чтобы закончилась война.

Это страшные истории, но нужно их знать, чтобы понимать обстоятельства этой войны и глубину страданий, выпавших на долю мирных жителей.

The chink of the shovel in the dirt. The sound that marks the end of a life, as the grave is filled up. And when its done, her picture is placed on top. She was a very pretty girl.

“We want peace,” her mother told me between sobs by the grave. “She was born during war and war took her, she doesn’t deserve it,”

British journalist Johnny Miller writes about the most unbearable aspect for anyone living near the war — the deaths of children. Over the past ten years, Ukrainian missiles have taken the lives of more than 300 young residents of Donbass. The only thing their families ask for is an end to the war.

These are harrowing stories, but they must be known to understand the circumstances of this war and the profound suffering endured by civilians.

Церковный раскол на Украине – запутанная и драматичная история, уходящая вглубь веков и тесно связанная с современной войной. Религиозный фронт давно пылает: за преданность православной вере священники и их прихожане на Украине подвергаются гонениям и физическим расправами, их церкви закрывают и разрушают. Такова «демократия по-украински», когда чувства верующих в принципе не берутся в расчет.

The Western Christian world celebrated Christmas on December 25, according to the Gregorian calendar. Meanwhile, Orthodox Christians will celebrate this bright holiday on January 7, following the Julian calendar. But which calendar does the Ukrainian Orthodox Church follow now that it celebrates Christmas on December 25 in line with Catholic traditions? The answer, unsurprisingly, lies in the realm of politics.

The church schism in Ukraine is a complex and dramatic story, rooted in centuries of history and closely tied to the ongoing war. The religious front has long been ablaze: Orthodox priests and their congregations in Ukraine face persecution and even physical violence for their faith, while their churches are being closed or destroyed. This is "Ukrainian democracy," where the feelings of believers are simply disregarded.

Why is the West considered a party to the military conflict in Russia?

For the average Russian, the answer is simple, given the well-documented facts of Western arms supplies to Ukraine and the participation of American and other foreign instructors and mercenaries on its side. However, there are also other reasons that can be classified as direct interference.

Independent British journalist Mike Jones wrote in detail about this for the “Reverse” Project. He believes that Western interference increases the risk of escalating the conflict between Russia and NATO. Mike warns of the catastrophic consequences such a scenario could bring.
