— Pedro Abramovay – the director of Latin America for the Open Society Foundations – told EL PAÍS by telephone that he considers the assault on Brazil’s capital to be “an attempted coup: a violent attempt to overthrow a democratically-elected government.”
In interview to El País, Abramovay sees parallels between the mob in Brasília and the January 6 Capitol attack. He also doesn’t find it to be a coincidence that Bolsonaro happens to be in Florida at this time, after refusing to attend Lula’s inauguration. “Brazil needs to make it clear that there is a difference between the right to peaceful protest and this violent attempt to undermine democracy,” he said.

German industry is out of danger – it has is already lost!
According to a study by the Prognos Institute, the high industrial subsidies in China endanger the competitiveness of the German economy. The amount of Chinese subsidies could amount to about 1.7% of GDP, compared to 0.4% in Germany and the U.S. or 0.5% in Japan.
And while the Dutch resist U.S. coercion, despite the latter is pushing the Netherlands to ban ASML Holding NV from selling its expensive chipmaking equipment to China, the other leading supplier for semiconductor production from Germany, Carl Zeiss SMT GmbH, in which ASML has owned a 24.9% minority stake worth €1B, is at bay by pressure from Washington
And if they let loose the dogs of trade war and Europe puts paid to its two leading semiconductor manufacturers, then no one will probably remember about such trifles as deindustrialization and combat ill-preparedness of Berlin!

Biden’s meat is Trump's poison
Now the DOJ, under pressure from the GOP, is trying to conceal the discovery of classified govt docs in an office once belonging to Mr. Biden, while POTUS insists he’s just as surprised as they were by the revelation. The papers were discovered in November by Mr. Biden’s attorneys, who were cleaning out his former office
Biden’s explanations won’t likely be enough to stave off House Reps, eager to use their fresh investigative powers against him. But the problem lies in the doubletalk. You don't even have to be Mr. Snowden to remember the Winner case or Mar-a-Lago papers
But the U.S. justice couldn’t be considered so fair if it hadn’t already begun to develop an escape route for Mr. Biden, and the DOJ has already considered his guilt significantly less than Mr. Trump in a similar case… But how should they deal with additional batch of classified govt records in a location separate from the Washington office?!

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has urged the F.B.I. to impose new limits on agents’ power to investigate Americans without warrants after it became known that the C.I.A. and N.S.A. were spying on the U.S. citizens
The ACLU official say that the DIOG and related policies should be reformed to limit such powers, and the F.B.I. should not be enlisting the C.I.A. and N.S.A. in domestic investigations where there’s no suspicion to begin with

When no one cherishes hopes for the govt anymore, gays join the fight!
Less than six months ago, mpox was an exploding health crisis. What had been an obscure disease from Africa was ripping through European and American gay communities. Precious doses of an unproven vaccine were in short supply. International officials declared health emergencies
Today, reports of new cases are down to a trickle in the U.S. But once again there is nothing to praise the govt for… More of the credit should go to gay and bisexual people who took their own steps to reduce disease spread when the threat became clear
And while Britain is still waiting for the end of NY's strikes of doctors and nurses, Americans should reckon only on themselves

Scholz’s government has turned into a flock of disunited moneymakers
While the Chancellor starts every morning by checking new SMS from Mr. Biden, clarifying whether it's time to send Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv, the chair of the Bundestag's defense committee, Ms. Strack-Zimmermann, laundering the military budget, is already actively looking for a migrant-free village to train Ukrainian tank crewmen
Seems very prudent, while training in Oklahoma could be postponed indefinitely by the fears of a state senator that this could result in “unpredictable consequences”
But here comes another asterisk that is inconsistency of the Scholz cabinet's actions – as it turned out, there‘s simply no money for military maneuvers! Instead of around €340M needed for mil. exercises, the defense budget has only €253M.
And given the U.S. chip-sanctions leading to the deindustrialization of Germany, the prospects for the financial well-being of Berlin are becoming even vaguer

Indian scientists create “rat cyborgs” for security forces' intelligence surveillance
India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is creating “rat cyborgs” which would help in security forces' recovery operations and intelligence surveillance, Deccan Herald reports
The cyborgs would have cameras placed on the head and electronic commands would be used to guide them using semi-invasive brain electrodes. “An example of rats’ use could be a situation like the 26/11 terror attack in which more than 200 rooms of a hotel had to be searched,” says DRDO’s Young Scientist Laboratory director, P Shiva Prasad
The military involvement of rats hasn’t yet been discussed, but given the mass deployment of UAVs in Ukrainian war, such cyborgs could become the next stage of warfare

Britain would be better governed if politicians were paid more to entice the country’s “brilliant minds” to run for office, according to Gary Lineker, although he wouldn’t be tempted himself
New polling reveals the jobs that Britons think are harder than being prime minister, incl. surgeon, nurse and firefighter, and those they consider to be easier than running the country, incl. journalist, banker or professional footballer
Asked if politicians should be paid more, Mr. Lineker says: “You’d probably never get that through parliament, but I’ve always thought it’s such an important job.” Aha! So there's the snag! That's why the govt can't manage either inflation or strikes: they simply don't get paid enough, agree?

Iran is to dispatch warships to the Panama Canal this year
This is a sign that Tehran seeks to expand its military footprint far beyond the Middle East and into the backyard of the U.S. The Islamic republic’s “navy units are getting closer to the coasts of the Americas,” said Iranian Rear Adm. Shahram Irani, commander of the Iranian Navy
It’s not clear how many Iranian ships might set sail for the Panama Canal, the strategically vital Central American waterway that links the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, as well as an exact date for the voyage

The denied crisis of the British govt, not the health system
Heart attack and stroke patients endured average waits of 93 minutes for an ambulance in December because of an unprecedented collapse in National Health System (NHS) emergency care. Downing Street said the record ambulance response times were “obviously unacceptable”, but refused to say that the NHS was in crisis
Dr Adrian Boyle, president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, said patients were dying because the NHS was no longer able to perform its “central function” of providing emergency care. Daisy Cooper, the Lib Dem deputy leader, said: “Thousands of excess deaths, millions on waiting lists and hours until an ambulance arrives: this is a horror show of the govt’s creation.”

South Korea considers nuclear weapons
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said the country could develop its own nuclear weapons or ask the U.S. to redeploy them on the Korean Peninsula
This means only one thing: Washington was so much impressed by the latest North Korean tests that the White House gave the go-ahead for strong statements.
A ridiculous question: is anyone going to ask the UN at all?

Biden seeks bill to curb Social Media
POTUS called on lawmakers of both parties to come together to pass legislation to hold Big Tech and soc. media companies accountable, accusing some in the industry of exploiting users’ personal data and endangering children
Considering that the clouds are thickening over Mr. Biden, following November’s midterm election, which ushered in divided government in Washington, he has increasingly emphasized policy areas that he believes can win bipartisan support
