VENEZUELAN WOMEN DEMAND ABORTION DECRIMINALIZATION IN 'GREEN WAVE' MARCH
The movements’ spokespeople were received by deputies from the AN’s social development and family committees, who agreed to establish an agenda focused on women's reproductive and sexual rights. A follow-up meeting was scheduled for October 13.
“What we are asking is the decriminalization of abortion, which is punished in all its forms, with the sole exception of a woman’s life being at risk, but without taking into consideration women’s overall health, cases of rape, incest or the fetus inviability,” Daniela Inojosa from the Tinta Violeta feminist collective told Venezuelanalysis.

THE IMPRINT OF AN INSURRECTIONAL PAST: A CONVERSATION WITH IRAIDA VARGAS AND MARIO SANOJA
Iraida Vargas and Mario Sanoja are not detached social scientists, indifferent to what they investigate. Instead, their work in anthropology and archeology is overtly engaged, seeking to link Venezuela’s history and prehistory to its present, including to its current political projects. Their 2015 book, The Long March toward Communal Society [La larga marcha hacia la sociedad comunal], scours Venezuela’s history and prehistory for precedents to its contemporary socialist communes. In this interview for Venezuelanalysis, Vargas and Sanoja talk about the methodology they apply in their research and about the historical and cultural roots of the communes that Venezuelans are building today.

EU TO SEND OBSERVATION MISSION TO VENEZUELA FOR REGIONAL ELECTIONS
The EU mission is expected to add further legitimacy to the upcoming “mega” elections after frequent, unfounded accusations of fraud by Washington and Brussels. The European bloc previously observed elections in the South American country in 2005 and 2006 and sent an “exploratory mission” to Venezuela in July to assess the viability of an new observation mission.
Previous elections that did not count on a EU mission were nonetheless declared free and fair by a number of international actors, including the Latin American Council of Electoral Experts (CEELA), which has once again announced that it will send a delegation to Venezuela in November.

VENEZUELA: MONETARY RECONVERSION HIT HARD BY CURRENCY SPECULATION
Venezuela’s national currency has devalued by over a quarter as the government rolls out a monetary reconversion.
On October 1, the digital bolívar (BsD) replaced the sovereign bolívar (BsS), knocking out six zeroes from its predecessor (1 BsD = 1,000,000 BsS). The two legal tenders will coexist in the coming weeks as the newly minted bills from 5 to 100 BsD, as well as a 1 BsD coin, begin to circulate.

THE IMPRINT OF AN INSURRECTIONAL PAST: A CONVERSATION WITH IRAIDA VARGAS AND MARIO SANOJA
What is the first thing that colonizers do when they take control of a people? They break the value system, particularly the existing forms of communal life and solidarity. They do it because they understand that such value systems go against their interests. In turn, we should be aware that maintaining or recovering value systems based on solidarity, systems where the vestiges of communal life remain, is necessary if we are committed to a socialist future.

VENEZUELA: MONETARY RECONVERSION HIT HARD BY CURRENCY SPECULATION
The imminent redenomination led to a currency speculation drive, with the black market rate going from 4 million to 4.8 million BsS, or 4.8 BsD, per 1 US dollar in the past week. The exchange value went up further to 5.14 BsD on its first day, meaning that the Venezuelan currency lost 28.5 percent of its value in ten days.
Social media users and analysts decried the speculative frenzy, with Economy Vice Minister William Castillo calling it a “political operation” and blasting opposition commentators who justify “attacks against the economy.”

VENEZUELA: US-BACKED GUAIDÓ FAILS TO SHOW UP IN COURT FOR $8.5 BILLION CONOCOPHILLIPS DISPUTE
A federal court in Washington, D.C. reportedly greenlighted oil giant ConocoPhillips to enforce a US $8.5 billion arbitration award against Venezuela. According to documents published by Law360, Venezuela was declared in “default” after self-proclaimed “Interim President” Juan Guaidó’s lawyers failed to respond to the court in over a year.
Washington’s recognition of Guaidó’s self-proclamation in January 2019, saw the politician be handed control of a number of Venezuela’s assets abroad as well as assume the country's legal representation before US courts. However, the hardline leader has been harshly criticized for failing to protect enterprises from creditors and award claimants looking to use shares to collect.

TALES OF RESISTANCE: VENEZUELA ON YOUTUBE
In recent weeks, social media in Venezuela has been “on fire” because a number of artists and influencers, some foreign and some Venezuelan, declared that the country’s situation has “improved dramatically” in the past few years.
We should not go from one extreme -- where the “catastrophe” was taken out of proportion to lobby for foreign intervention -- to another where everything is “fine” because a youtuber bought a cute house on the beach. When it comes to Venezuela, no 15-minute video will be enough to grasp reality. Still, we appreciate the effort.

OVERCOMING INEQUALITIES: A CONVERSATION WITH OTRO BETA (PART 1)
Otro Beta is a self-organized project aimed at youth from Venezuela’s barrios. Its initial focus was on culture and sports, and even today basketball and breakdance tournaments continue to be important for Otro Beta. However, the project’s new emphases are technical education and counseling for victims of machista violence. Through a variety of approaches, Otro Beta has always sought to bring the barrio youth away from the dead-ends that capitalism imposes on them. It aims to incorporate them into the new horizons of personal and collective development that the Bolivarian Revolution has opened up. Today Otra Beta has almost three hundred cells or “confluence points” and eight Socialist Endogenous Development Nuclei spread throughout the country.

VENEZUELA: US-BACKED GUAIDÓ FAILS TO SHOW UP IN COURT FOR $8.5 BILLION CONOCOPHILLIPS DISPUTE
The massive award was issued in March 2019 by a World Bank International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) tribunal for the 2007 nationalization of ConocoPhillips’ oil projects in Venezuela (Hamaca, Petrozuata and Corocoro) under the former Hugo Chávez government. Both the Nicolás Maduro government and the Guaidó camp have challenged the ICSID decision, with an annulment hearing scheduled for later this month.
The latest ruling in favor of the Houston-based corporation was grounded on the opposition leader’s legal team missing the deadline "to plead or otherwise defend this action though duly served with summons and copy of the complaint” on March 10, 2020.
