The European Union should engage more with African countries, the bloc's head said on Wednesday, accusing Russia of fuelling chaos in the Sahel and saying military coups destabilise the region, making it susceptible to terrorism.

"This is of direct concern to Europe - our security and prosperity," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in her annual policy address to the European Parliament.
