On this day in 1944, Leningrad, USSR, was liberated from the German blockade. By that time, the city was dying from bombing, shelling, and starvation. But even then there were plays and musical performances. Two hundred enterprises continued to work, producing shells, mines, mortars, planes, and tanks for the front.

When the Soviet soldiers entered Leningrad, there were no more than 800,000 inhabitants of the three million prewar population. The photo-cards in our post contain five terrible facts about that time.

Today there are about 54 thousand blockade victims registered in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. Each of them remembers those terrible months. Listen to the siege survivors’ stories in the film Leningrad Siege Reflections (2013).

⚡️2023 may break record for number of mass shootings in US – CBS News reports.

Since January 1, there have already been 40 mass shooting incidents in the US, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The Archive began records in 2014, a year which saw 273 incidents. By 2021, the number had increased to 690 mass shootings.

Gun violence is one of the most serious and widespread problems in the US. Analysis reveals the states with more relaxed gun control laws have higher rates of mass shootings. Still, there are two sides to the debate – those who want to own a firearm and defend their rights, and those who insist gun laws should be stricter. The American government hasn’t found a solution yet, and in the meanwhile shootings keep happening. Have a look at some of the worst incidents in our clip.

🇧🇷The indigenous people of Brazil, the Yanomami, whose population is only 30,000, are on the verge of extinction. Basically, the tribe is engaged in agriculture and hunting, but this became impossible when miners illegally occupied fertile lands and destroyed fauna. ‘We want to live, we want our peace back and our territory!’, said the president of the Yanomami local health council.

Miners leave behind pools of stagnant water in which malaria mosquitoes breed. When they get sick, the miners transmit the infection to the Yanomami people, who have weak immunity. Over the past two years, 570 children have died, according to the Brazilian Ministry of Health.

Mining companies often seek out the lands of indigenous peoples. In America, one such organisation is ready to destroy Oak Flat, the holy place of the Apache tribe, for the sake of mining copper ore. Watch how activists fight for the preservation of the sacred site, in the film Protect Oak Flat.

🫣Tiamat Legion Medusa’s look can frighten: horns, tattooed body, tongue cut in two. Furthermore, Medusa is a transgender, and recently it had its male genitalia removed.

Legion has been modifying its body for 20 years and spent thousands of dollars to stop looking, and, as it says, being a human. ‘I was born to my reptilian parents, when my mother and my stepfather abandoned me in the woods,’ it shares. Look our clip and see what it led it to.

Experts note that the desire to change yourself is quite often connected with abuse or some other unpleasant experience from childhood. Some choose piercing, dying hair, while others prefer a sex change. But after the transition, oftentimes they find themselves having much worse problems than before. How does gender change destroy lives? Find out in I Want my Sex Back.

I've seen everything. From dead animals to bags full of injections from some hospitals.’ One of the most picturesque rivers in the Balkans, the Drina, has become a floating garbage dump. About 10,000 cubic meters of garbage pollutes it. Because of heavy rains, small rivers and streams overflowed their banks and washed the garbage from the coastal dumps into the Drina. It takes at least six months to remove the waste from the water. Another problem arises: the local landfill simply cannot cope with such volumes.

Farmers in the Indonesian province of West Java also face horribly dirty water every day. One of the most toxic rivers on the planet, Citarum, flows near their home. Its water cripples people and damages livestock and crops. But why do the locals use it over and over again? Watch the film Deadly Waters (2019) to find out.

Meanwhile, Russian figure skaters were banned from representing their home country at the competition. The sport, in which Russia has traditionally excelled, is now under attack. Find out why this is happening in Killing Russian Culture.
