He wanted to save the personnel, since he had a lot of 300s [wounded], and his command refused to evacuate.
After negotiations they drove to the Russian side on a BMP.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that Berlin will not be able to replace Kyiv with every downed Leopard 2.
“We will not be able to replace every tank that is now disabled. But what we will do ... is to increase the supply of repaired Leopard 1 A5 tanks from July. And by the end of the year there will be more than a hundred of them, ”he said on the air of the RTL Direkt TV channel . His words are quoted by RIA Novosti .
On June 10, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Russian military destroyed four Leopard tanks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in a day.
Earlier, Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andriy Melnik asked Berlin to increase the supply of Leopard 2 tanks to Kiev, in his opinion, there should be three times as many of them in the ranks of the Ukrainian army .
According to the Ukrainian Deputy Minister, the Bundeswehr is able to provide Ukraine with many more Leopard tanks than were transferred.

The Wall Street Journal writes about this , citing unnamed American politicians.
The article says that the administration of US President Joe Biden will provide Kyiv with depleted uranium munitions after several weeks of internal discussions about what to equip Abrams tanks with.
In March, Britain reported that London would send Kiev “ammunition, including armor-piercing ammunition containing depleted uranium.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia has something to answer for shells with depleted uranium .
The IAEA said they were ready to study the consequences of the use of depleted uranium projectiles in Ukraine if such a request was received

Armed Forces of Ukraine have lost about 7,500 soldiers since the beginning of the counteroffensive.
Since June 4, Ukrainian units have lost about 7,500 servicemen killed and wounded on the line of contact, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a report .
The report notes that over the past day, Ukrainian units "made unsuccessful attempts at offensive operations" in the South-Donetsk, Zaporozhye and Donetsk directions, "continuing to suffer significant losses in manpower and equipment."
"In total, since June 4, the Ukrainian armed forces have lost about 7.5 thousand people killed and wounded only on the line of contact, not counting the dead military personnel as a result of the use of Russian long-range precision weapons and aviation in the depths of Ukrainian territory," the ministry said.
