Dual Booting with Additional OS

Hey everyone! Im building my first pc, and I want to dual boot Ubuntu for mostly programming and windows for mostly gaming. Also, I want to be able to learn penetration testing with kali linux, but I do not want to use kali in virtualbox because some features (like fern for example) cant work properly as a vm. Ive heard a bit about live CDs and usbs, but im not sure if that would fit my needs or be practical. So I have 2 questions that I would appreciate a ton to be answered. First, should I actually dual boot them or is it not worth it and just get an ubuntu vm? And second, should i get a bootable cd / usb or again, is it not worth it? Thanks everyone!

Zorin OS

Hi, I'm new to the Linux world and am looking at switching over when I get my laptop back from repairs. So far I was thinking of going the Zorin OS as I think it looks the visually appealing. Has anyone here used it? And if so what did you think? And was it good for Steam gaming?

Linux newbie needs a little help with dual booting and Intel Rst

Hey there. I would like to try out Linux more extensively than with the live USB. Therefore I thought about dual booting my dell xps 13 9360 . When I try to install Linux on my system I get the notification, that I need to deactivate Intel rst in order to do so. I am really hesitant to do since I read, that this could lead to crashing windows on the laptop. I am relying heavily on that thing and I need it to do my work, therefore I don't want to crash anything on it. I just want to try Linux and then decide whether I want to switch completely or not

btw is the dell xps 13 a good machine to run Linux on it ( is the hardware well supported ? ) I had issues with the Wifi signal while I was using Linux via the live USB

thanks for your help !

How do you feel when Windows users ask you for some help, when you're a Linux-only user?

I'm a Linux-only user for around 8 years. I only use Windows on a virtual machine for specific purposes, and almost all of tasks can be done on Linux. I'm curious that why many people that knows about Linux will be an expert of the computer, and keeps asking Windows-related things that I don't know, which leads me into googling for them and many times could give an undesirable result and keeps them asking me again and again until it's fixed.

So I'm curious, do you experience something like this, or am I only one who suffer these.

Is there an "at"-like cron alternative?

This is probably a stupid question, and I know the common answer will be something along the lines of "just learn cron", but it seems like there's a huge gulf between the simplicity and elegance of the way the "at" command works and the bulky, industrial quality of "cron". I just want to be able to type in something like:

at 3:00 PM weekdays until 2020-05-01

and then dump a recurring job onto my atq. I particularly don't feel like screwing around setting up the execution environment/path etc. of cron: I just want my user, with my usual shell environment, to run a potentially recurring command. I also plan on changing this schedule frequently, disabling it, etc.

If it helps, the use case is to run predictive models that need a lot of babysitting: I can let them run by themselves for a few days, but then something changes in the external environment which requires me to modify the models, or I get a request for a new output feature and they need to be tweaked, or a new data source becomes available, and I don't have time to build a more robustly engineered solution.

I finally found a cheap USB Fingerprint reader that just works out-of-the-box

***Premise***: Fingerprints are not secure, they are just biometric ID. They are great UIDs, but are terrible passwords: they can be *forced*, *faked*, and *can't be changed*. That said...

I finally found a cheap USB fingerprint reader that works out of the box on my Ubuntu 20.04 installation!

I was looking for something like this for years: I use fingerprint authentication on my smartphone since 2015 and I was looking to do the same on my home computer (read the premise to know why this is not good idea for security reasons).

I searched online many times to find a review of a USB reader that just works out-of-the-box on Linux but all I was able to find was information about the one embedded in notebooks.

Last week I started another research and, finally, I found an [Amazon review in German](https://www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/customer-reviews/R2PHN6SCS6DOWB/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B078WKXTT7) for a [Benss USB Fingerprint Reader (UA002)](http://www.benss-tech.com/index.php/product-c11.html). The reviewer didn't say if was actually working but was so kind to type the USB ID of the reader: `04f3:0c26`. After some more googling I found that it [actually works](https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libfprint/libfprint/-/merge_requests/1) and so I decided to order one.

Today I finally got it and I am happy to say that it seems to work better than what I was expecting!

The first thing I noticed was that the USB ID was slightly different: `04f3:0c28` instead of `04f3:0c26`, but luckily it is still inside the [supported device list](https://fprint.freedesktop.org/supported-devices.html).

On Ubuntu 20.04 was recognized automatically and to enable the login with fingerprint I simply followed the [official Wiki instructions](https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/session-fingerprint.html.en):

1. Open the [Activities](https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/shell-introduction.html.en#activities) overview and start typing Users.
2. Click on Users to open the panel.
3. Press on Disabled, next to Fingerprint Login to add a fingerprint for the selected account. If you are adding the fingerprint for a different user, you will first need to Unlock the panel.
4. Select the finger that you want to use for the fingerprint, then Next.
5. Follow the instructions in the dialog and swipe your finger at a *moderate speed* over your fingerprint reader. Once the computer has a good record of your fingerprint, you will see a Done! message.
6. Select Next. You will see a confirmation message that your fingerprint was saved successfully. Select Close to finish.

After verifying that the login via fingerprint worked, I enabled the pam authentication as well:

sudo pam-auth-update

I was curious to see how good where the scans made by this 24€ reader so I compiled the sources of [libfprint](https://github.com/freedesktop/libfprint) to have access to the binaries that allows to save the scanned fingerprint as a PGM image (you can find inside the "examples" directory) and, to my amateur eye, they look pretty good! The resolution seems sharp enough but they are a little narrow (probably around 1 cm wide).

One very important thing I figure out while checking the images is that I got the best result while **swiping the finger from the joint to the tip** of the phalanx, with the reader logo/led facing the joint.

Anyway I just wanted to share this information because I was looking for it literally for years.

And remember, fingerprints are not secure so use this at your risk.
